info@intisumberbajasakti.comMortar (instant cement) is becoming increasingly popular due to its practicality, quick application, and neater results. However, despite its ease, many builders still make small mistakes that have a significant impact on the quality of the installation. To ensure a stronger, crack-free building, here are some common mistakes to avoid.
1. Wrong Water Amount
Many builders mix mortar with water "approximately," even though the water ratio determines the mortar's strength.
The result: the mortar becomes too runny or too hard, reducing its adhesive strength.
Solution:
Follow the water ratio stated on the packaging (generally 5–7 liters per 25 kg).
2. Not Mixing the Mortar Thoroughly
An uneven mixture can weaken some areas.
Solution:
Ensure the mixture is mixed or manually stirred thoroughly without lumps.
3. Using Mortar That Has Already Dried
Don't add more water to mortar that has begun to harden.
The result: the mortar's strength is drastically reduced.
Solution:
Make a sufficient amount of mortar and use it within 1 hour.
4. Do Not Wet the Wall or Brick Surface
A surface that is too dry absorbs water from the mortar, weakening its adhesion.
Solution:
Wet the surface before application.
5. Application Thickness Not Up to Standard
Plaster mortar, plaster, and ceramic adhesive have a specific thickness.
If it's too thick, it can crack easily.
If it's too thin, it won't seal properly.
Solution:
Follow the standard thickness (e.g., plaster 1–2 cm, plaster 2–3 mm).
6. Not Cleaning the Surface Before Applying Mortar
Dust, oil, or dirt can prevent the mortar from adhering properly.
Solution:
Clean the surface before application.
7. Installing Ceramic Tiles Without Pressing or Leveling
Ceramic tiles must be pressed and tapped lightly to ensure the adhesive mortar spreads evenly.
Otherwise, the tiles may become hollow, easily come loose, or crack.
8. Using Mortar Inappropriately
Plaster mortar ≠ plaster mortar ≠ ceramic adhesive mortar.
Common mistake: using one type of mortar for all jobs.
Solution:
Use mortar according to its intended use.
