How Factories Make Billets Before They Become Steel Products

Billet is a basic material in the form of a rectangular bar that is the main raw material for making various steel products, such as reinforced concrete, wire rod, and other steel profiles. Billet is produced through a long process in a factory with strict quality standards. The following are the stages of how the factory makes billet before being processed into steel products:

1. Melting Process
The making of billet begins with the process of melting raw materials, namely scrap metal, sponge iron, or other ferrous materials. The raw material is put into the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) or Blast Furnace and heated to a temperature of around 1,600 degrees Celsius.

2. Processing of Steel Liquid (Refining)
After melting, the steel liquid is filtered and processed in a ladle furnace to remove impurities, such as sulfur and phosphorus. In this stage, the chemical composition of the steel liquid is adjusted to suit the specifications of the final product.

3. Continuous Casting (Billet Printing)
After the refining process, the steel liquid is flowed into the continuous casting machine. Here, molten steel is poured into a water-cooled mold, then slowly solidifies and forms a long billet bar with a standard size, usually 130 x 130 mm or 150 x 150 mm.

4. Billet Cutting
The formed and hardened billet will be cut to the desired length, usually between 6 and 12 meters. Cutting is done with a special machine so that the cutting results are even and precise.

5. Cooling and Quality Inspection
The cut billet is cooled naturally in a special area. After cooling, the billet goes through a visual inspection process and metallurgical testing to ensure there are no defects, cracks, or dimensional discrepancies.

6. Ready for Further Processing
Billets that have met quality standards are then ready to be sent to the rolling mill to be processed into various steel products, such as reinforced concrete, H-beam, WF, wire rod, and others.
