How to Install Practical Columns in Residential Buildings

Practical columns are additional structural elements commonly used in residential construction, especially on brick walls. Their function is to strengthen the building structure, maintain wall stability, and reduce the risk of cracks due to shifting soil or building weight. Installation should not be haphazard.

Here are the correct steps for installing practical columns in residential buildings:

1. Determine the Location of Practical Columns
Practical columns are usually installed every 3 meters on long walls, or at corners where walls meet, next to doors and windows. Draw guide lines using string or a measuring tool to ensure straight and symmetrical results.

2. Prepare the Formwork and Reinforcement
Use plain or threaded reinforcing steel with a diameter of 10 mm or according to the design, arranged into a rectangular frame (usually 10 x 10 cm). Then, construct the formwork using boards or plywood as the column mold.

3. Pour the Concrete Mixture
Use a concrete mix with the appropriate ratio, generally 1:2:3 (cement: sand: gravel) plus sufficient water. Pour the concrete mixture into the formwork slowly, tamping it gently to eliminate air pockets.

4. Wait for the Concrete to Dry
Allow the concrete to dry for at least 24–48 hours before removing the formwork. Ensure there is no shifting during the drying process.

5. Continue Installing Brickwork Around the Column
Once the concrete column is complete, continue installing the brickwork. The brickwork should adhere tightly to the column and should be secured with wire ties for added structural strength.
