Common Mistakes in Installing Lightweight Bricks that Must be Avoided

Lightweight bricks are now the primary choice in many construction projects due to their light weight, precise dimensions, and quick installation process. However, if installed carelessly, the result can be cracked, uneven walls, and even prone to collapse.

So, to ensure your project remains sturdy and the results are neat, let's learn about common mistakes in installing lightweight bricks that you must avoid!

1. Not Using Special Adhesive for Lightweight Bricks
Many still use cement-sand mortar for lightweight bricks. However, this material is unsuitable because it doesn't bond strongly and results in too thick grout.
Use instant adhesive or mortar specifically for lightweight bricks that has high adhesion and can be applied thinly (about 3 mm).

2. Uneven Base Surface
If the floor or foundation where the bricks are installed is uneven, the wall will easily tilt and the load will be unevenly distributed.

Before starting installation, ensure the base surface is completely level and free of dust or other material residue to ensure precise results.

3. Not Checking the Moisture Content of the Bricks
Lightweight bricks that are too dry can absorb water from the mortar too quickly, weakening the bond.
Before installation, wet the lightweight bricks sufficiently to ensure optimal mortar adhesion.

4. Not Installing Reinforcement or Wire Mesh
Reinforcement serves to strengthen the wall structure. If it is missed, the wall can crack, especially at door and window joints.
Ideally, install wire mesh or galvanized strips every 3–4 layers of brick to increase structural strength.

5. Not Filling Grout Properly
Incompletely filled grout or joints between bricks can create air cavities.
These cavities make the wall prone to cracking and loose when plastered. Ensure all vertical and horizontal grout is completely filled with mortar.

6. Installing Too Quickly Without Checking Alignment
Sometimes workers want to finish quickly but forget to check the wall's levelness.
Use a spirit level and construction string every few layers of brick to ensure they remain straight and level.

7. Not Waiting for the Wall to Dry Before Finishing
Plastering or painting immediately after the bricks are installed can result in hairline cracks.
Allow the wall to dry for at least 2–3 days to allow the mortar to fully harden before finishing.

Conclusion
Installing lightweight bricks is indeed easier than installing red bricks, but it still requires precision.
By avoiding the mistakes mentioned above, you can achieve strong, precise, and durable walls.

And of course, make sure you use SNI-certified lightweight bricks and the best construction materials for maximum results!
