Practical Column Installation Method for Tidy and Stronger Walls

Practical columns are a crucial element in building construction, especially for 1-2 story houses. Their function is not only to strengthen the wall structure but also to ensure the brickwork remains straight and neat. However, for optimal results, practical columns must be installed using the correct technique. Here's a complete guide.

1. Prepare the Right Tools and Materials
Before starting work, ensure all materials and equipment are ready, such as reinforcing steel (generally 8 mm), stirrups (6 mm) spaced 15-20 cm apart, and formwork made of boards or plywood.
Also, ensure the concrete mix uses the appropriate ratio of cement, sand, and gravel for the desired quality, for example, 1:2:3 for lightweight structures.

2. Determine the Position of Practical Columns
Practical columns are typically installed at each corner of the building, at wall junctions, and every 3-4 meters along lightweight brick or red brick walls.
Use a measuring line and a spirit level to ensure the columns are perpendicular and level, ensuring a neat final wall.

3. Install Practical Column Reinforcement
Assemble the reinforcement to the planned dimensions, then install it in the designated position. Ensure the reinforcement is securely tied with binding wire and securely connected to the sloof beam reinforcement below and the ring beam above.
Also ensure sufficient spacing between the reinforcement and the formwork so that the concrete can completely envelop the steel during pouring, improving corrosion resistance in the column.

4. Cast Correctly
Once the reinforcement is installed and the formwork is strong, pour the concrete mixture slowly while compacting it with a metal rod or vibrator to avoid air voids.
Use fresh concrete and do not allow the mixture to dry before use to ensure maximum strength.

5. Remove the Formwork Carefully
The formwork can be removed once the concrete has reached its initial strength, usually 1–2 days after pouring.
Ensure the resulting practical column is smooth, free of cracks, and remains plumb. If small holes are found on the surface, they can be patched with fine-grit cement mortar before continuing with the wall work.

6. Connect the Practical Columns to the Wall
When laying bricks, ensure each layer of brick adheres firmly to the practical column by filling the gaps between them with cement mortar.
This is crucial to ensure the column is completely integrated with the wall, ensuring a more stable structure that is less prone to cracking.
