Step-by-Step Casting the Floor of Your Own House

Have plans to make your own upper floor at home? Casting a slab is not impossible to do yourself (or with a trusted team of craftsmen), as long as you know the sequence of work.

Let's take a look at the following steps so that your slab is strong, even, and durable!

1. Prepare Materials & Tools
Materials: cement, sand, gravel (split), clean water, reinforcing iron (wiremesh/Ø Iron), formwork board, bondek (optional)

Tools: mixer or manual mixing place, trowel, bucket, measuring tool, waterpass

2. Install Formwork and Supports
The formwork functions to hold the cast mixture during the drying process. Make sure:

Use strong and tight boards (so the mixture doesn't leak)

Supported with sturdy bamboo or scaffolding

Checked using a waterpass so the surface is even

3. Install Iron Reinforcement
To strengthen the roof:

Use wire mesh or concrete iron Ø 8-10 mm

Make sure the reinforcement position is in the middle of the thickness of the roof, not attached to the bottom

Give a concrete cover of at least 2 cm so the iron doesn't rust quickly

4. Mix the Concrete Mixture
Use the standard ratio:
1 cement: 2 sand: 3 gravel + enough water
Mix well, can use a mixer for consistent results.

If you want to be more practical, you can also use ready mix.

5. Casting Process
Pour the concrete mixture little by little starting from one side

Flatten and compact while leveling with a board

Avoid long breaks so the surface doesn't 'crack cold'

6. Post-Curing Care
Important! The newly cast roof must be:

Protected from direct sunlight

Watered regularly for at least 7 days
The goal is for the concrete to harden perfectly and not crack quickly.

Additional Tips:
✅ Use bondek to be more economical and practical
✅ Make sure the height of the roof is at least 10 cm for optimal strength
✅ Don't rush to remove the formwork, wait at least 14 days
