info@intisumberbajasakti.comGot leftover paint after a renovation project? It's a shame to throw it away! But the problem is, opened paint often dries quickly, clumps, and even smells if not stored properly. So, to keep it usable later, let's look at tips for storing opened paint so that it lasts!
1. Close the Can Tightly
Air is the main enemy of paint! Once exposed to air, paint can dry quickly.
Tip: Clean the edges of the can first, then close it tightly using a wooden hammer (not iron, so as not to damage the lid).
2. Store in a Cool and Dry Place
Paint doesn't like heat and humidity. Extreme room temperatures can damage its quality.
Tip: Store in a room inside the house, not an open warehouse. Keep away from direct sunlight.
3. Turn the Can Over (for Oil-Based Paint)
Turning the can upside down can help prevent air from entering.
Tip: Close it tightly first, then turn the can upside down (water-based paint is not recommended for this method).
4. Transfer to a Smaller Container
If there is little paint left, it is better to transfer it.
Tip: Use a glass jar or airtight plastic. Don't forget to label the color & date!
5. Use Plastic Coating
Coat the surface of the paint with plastic before closing the can, to prevent crusting on the surface.
Tip: You can use kitchen plastic wrap or regular clear plastic.
Signs of Damaged Paint
Smells pungent (not the smell of regular paint)
Clumps badly and cannot be stirred evenly
The color changes drastically
If it's like this, it's best not to use it again, because the results can be bad and not stick perfectly.
